Synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial activities of some pyridoxine based metal complexes

Abstract

A series of transition metal complexes of pyridoxin e (PD) were prepared and their structures were eluc idated on the basis of elemental analyses, conductance measuremen ts, spectral (IR, NMR, UV-Visible and EPR) and th ermal studies. On the basis of spectral studies, an octah edral geometry assigned for metal complexes of the type [M(PD) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] (NO 3 ) 2 , where M = Mn(II) 1 , Co(II) 2 , Ni(II) 3 , Cu(II) 4 , Zn(II) 5 . The complexes exhibit an octahedral geometry around the metal center. The b identate behavior of the ligand was proposed on the basis of spectral studies. It was found that pyridoxine form ed stable metal complexes with these metal ions. Th e thermal stability of the complexes has been studied by ther mogravimetric analysis which support the presence o f water in coordination sphere. Cyclic voltammetry studies sho wed the redox behavior of all complexes. These comp lexes were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal act ivities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus an d Bacillus subtilis, Aspergillus niger and candida albicans sp ecies. The results of the antimicrobial studies sho wed that the metal complexes have higher inhibitory activity tha n the ligand pyridoxine against the tested bacteria and fungi species.
