Synthesis and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticle Loaded on Cellulose and Cellulose Carbamate

Abstract

In this research, study the possibility of silver nanoparticle (Ag NPs) synthesis by plant extract reduction, which is extracted from Malva sylvestris by ethanol and heating. Silver nanoparticles were stabilized on cellulose and cellulose carbamate as supporting template and their antibacterial activity were studied against E. colli and Staphyl coccous. Cellulose carbamate was prepared by cellulose reaction with urea at 150 c and FTIR analysis revealed the presence of carbonyl group in comparison with cellulose. Cellulose and cellulose carbamate/Ag Nps composite were examined by SEM, EDS, XRD and FTIR, where SEM showed fine grain of silver nanoparticle was dispersed on micro-cellulose particle and has average size about 30 nm, so EDS analysis showed the presence of silver metal more than 80% atomic percent and the rest are sodium and magnesium. XRD analysis showed the only phase of silver metal exists with no other phases of Ag2O except appearance of cellulose peaks. FTIR analysis was examined for pure template, cellulose or cellulose carbamate/ Ag Nps composites, where the template is oxidized to more carbonyl group. The antibacterial activity was 4-5 mm for E. colli and 10-25 mm for Staphyl Coccous in the presence of cellulose/ Ag Nps and cellulose carbamate/Ag Nps respectively.
