Rift Valley Fever: A Review
Abstract
Rift Valley Fever is mosquito-borne viral infection affecting animals and humans. It is an acute viral disease that affects domestic animals such as cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and camels and primarily domestic livestock, but can be passed to humans causing fever. Serious complications like jaundice, haemorrhage, renal failure may occur in chronic cases. Spread is by the bite of infected mosquitoes, typically the Aedes or Culex g enera. Humans are also readily infected through aerosols from infected animals when humidit y is high, or by exposure to infected animal tissues, aborted fetuses, mosquito bites, and labor atory procedures. ELISA test confirms diagnosis along with careful symptomatic observatio n.
