Development and characterization of bioactive macrocyclic metal complexes, use as a potential drug

Abstract

A novel series of macrocyclic ligand 5,12,17,24-tetraoxo-1,4,13,16-tetraazacyclotetra-cosane and its Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) complexes of the type [M(C20H20O4N4)Cl2] where M= Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) have been synthesized by condensation of phthalic acid and ethylenediamine. The ligand and its complexes have been characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, ESI MS, TG/DTA, UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques, conductivity and magnetic measurements. On the basis of these studies, a six coordinate octahedral geometry around the metal ions in the complexes has been proposed. This study highlights the antimicrobial properties of the synthesized metal complexes. To assess the inhibiting potential these metal complexes were examined for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against some bacterial and fungal species by performing MIC80, disc diffusion assay, growth curve studies and cell cytotoxicity assay. Ni (II) complex showed more potent antifungal and antibacterial properties.
