Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) Technique and the Synthesis of Carbon Nanomaterials (CNMs)

Abstract

The Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) technique is one of the most suitable methods for the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) in terms of product purity and large scale production. The method is simple and economic for synthesizing at low temperature and ambient pressure. CVD allows the experimenter to avoid the process of separating nanotubes/ Nanofibres/ Nanobeads etc. from the carbonaceous particulate. CVD reactions are strongly affected by the experimental parameters, such as reactor temperature, pressure, precursor composition catalyst and concentration. A minor modification in the experimental parameters causes a drastic change in the morphology and yield of the materials. A little change in temperature and catalyst leads to different morphologies of CNMS derived from the same precursor. General experience is that low temperature CVD (600-9000C) yields MWNTs, whereas higher temperature (900-12000C) reaction favours SWNT growth Sometimes carbon nanofibres and nano beads are also formed depending upon the nature of the source materials. In this paper, a typical thermal CVD process for the synthesis of and the parameters such as catalysts, support materials, carbon precursor and growth temperature that determine the quality and morphology of the synthesized carbon nanomaterials () are discussed. The synthesis of , growth mechanism and methods of purification are also described.
