Batch study on the removal of humic substances in aqueous solutions by adsorption using Coula edulis nut shell activated carbon as adsorbent

Abstract

This study is related to the adsorption of humic substances in aqueous solutions by activated carbon obtained from a pyrolisis of coula edulis nut shells at 600°C. The batch system was used to investigate the effects of experimental factors such as pH, doses of adsorbent, initial concentrations, contact time and temperature. The adsorption capacity decreased with the increase in pH, adsorbent dose and increased with increase in concentration, temperature and contact time. The applicability of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms has permitted to observe that the best fitting of experimental data is obtained by using Langmuir model. The kinetics of the adsorption of humic substances by activated carbon followed the pseudo first order model rather than the pseudo second order. The mechanisms of the interaction humic substances activated carbon determined by the external mass transfer and intra particle mass transfer models is consistent to the external mass transfer model. The change of free energy was found negative according to the experimental conditions of this study, what indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous.
